The Natural Approach to Fighting Inflammation

A lot of people have been asking me of late for remedies, tips & tricks to help combat inflammation from injuries so I am clearing up some areas in this blog.

First things first that I tell all of my clients when working with them is, if inflammation is present in your body in any shape or form, your body has to go through a number of stages before beginning the healing process… If you are suffering from acute or chronic inflammation around an injured muscle, tendon, ligament or joint I believe that the body will not properly begin the healing process until you look at your body as a whole.

If you have poor dietary habits & poor self-care, then there is a big likelihood that inflammation may already be present in your gut & digestive system. This inflammation is putting a constant strain on your body to “heal” itself, however if you don’t look at the foods & other aggravators, then your body’s healing abilities is dramatically reduced. This does not look good for any new & acute inflammation (or chronic at that) that may be present in your body due to injury because you are asking your body to do a crazy amount of healing but not providing the resources to do so… You couldn’t expect to fully service a car with a few spanners can you?

9 Tips to Reduce Inflammation in Your Body

Increase Water Intake

Take some time out to relax, unwind and just breath as increasing the relaxation response will help reduce stress & tension within your body, thus reducing inflammation & promoting healing.

Breathe

Take some time out to relax, unwind and just breath as increasing the relaxation response will help reduce stress & tension within your body, thus reducing inflammation & promoting healing.

Movement

Going for gentle walks, swimming, mild stretching or yoga will help increase the flow of blood around your body and pump out any stagnant & sticky inflammation that may be present in your extremities.

Heal Your Gut

Taking fermented foods like sauerkraut, or kifir are an awesome way to increase your immune system, build gut health & help the body to repair & heal itself from the inside out.

Onions & Garlic

Adding onion to your meals will provide your body with some potent antioxidants that can help your body fight inflammation. Garlic is not only an old-wives take for colds & flu, it contains sulfur compounds that stimulate your immune system to fight disease & inflammation.

Leafy Greens

Pack up your smoothie with spinach, kale & other leafy greens as they have carotenoids & antioxidants that reduce inflammation.

Ginger & Turmeric

These are super healing foods and should be added to everything & anything when inflammation is present in your body. Check out my Golden Paste blog for a great Turmeric recipe.

Healthy Fats

Give yourself an oil change by eating lots of healthy monounsaturated fats in olive oil, nuts & avocados as well as the omega-3’s from wild caught salmon, sardines & herring.

Reduce Sugar Intake

By lowering your sugar intake, your body has more energy to break down your healthy foods for all of the vitamins & minerals that it can utilise for healing.
